in which i do a series of things

This is the piece that was in the CCAC's Thunderdome show. I'm actually happy with it, which I didn't think I would be. It took me most of the summer to come to this point. Originally it was a video dealing both with deliberate performance and with returning the gaze of the viewer, but it didn't mesh the way I'd hoped. I think I'm going to make a second video dealing with gaze, and maybe they can be shown together if I ever show this again.

The quote that sums up my intent for this video better than any artist statement I could come up with so far goes, "Our bodies are occupied territories. Perhaps the ultimate goal of performance, especially if you are a woman, gay or a person “of color,” is to decolonize our bodies; and make these decolonizing mechanisms apparent to our audience in the hope that they will get inspired to do the same with their own." Also, originally I wanted to call this "I'm not Dutch," but I don't know if anyone would get the joke.

Apropos nothing, this has been my top/ most-enjoyable time-waster this week: SCP. (Hint: go to the full experiment log.)

Selling a piece and other shenanigans

So someone (a friend, but still) asked to buy one of my instax photos. This one, to be exact:

Now I have no problems selling this (after I get a better scan of it from the big DAAP scanners, not my little HP)... but I have no idea what to price it. Especially between friends. Suggestions? It is a VERY small photo, about the size of a credit card.

In other news, I finally got around to scanning some of the daily comics I've been doing, so they're all available on my tumblr. (Also on my tumblr, continuing work on my YouTube photography.)

I might have posted this before

...but I have a YouTube channel upon which I sometimes post updates about my life or the occasional vlog with my friend Nina. They're random and silly and don't have much to do about art, but I enjoy practicing video/ sound editing, so it's not a total loss.

This was our first, we have maybe 12 up so far. Enjoy?

This is just so brilliant. I want to make my photo project at least a quarter as brilliant as this. If I can do that, I'll be VERY pleased with myself.

Final crit: photo

Tonight we had our "final" critique for Intermediate Digital Photography, from 10 to 1 am. I put "final" in quotes because most of us are going to continue with our projects beyond the class (I know I am, I'm angling for a show, possibly at Semantics).

So I thought I'd share my final images. Keep in mind these were printed 25" x 16" or so, they looked really nice printed large and tacked to the wall.

Eventually I will also scan my latest advanced drawing work and post that as well. But for now, I have a paper on McLuhan, le Feuvre, and Family Guy to write.

Vloggers and Vlogging

For my photography class with Jordan Tate, I'm looking at popular (or not-so-popular) YouTube vloggers and distilling film stills from their posts. So I thought I'd share some of my favorite vloggers.

WheezyWaiter was my first "real" introduction to video blogging. I had actually started watching a series called Alex reads Twilight before that, which features Alex Day reading chapters of Stephanie Meyer's Twilight and giving his impressions (generally not favorable--I will write more about what I think about Twilight later). But I didn't really start actively following a vlogger until I discovered WheezyWaiter. From there I went on to watch Alex Day's other videos, and through his work with Worldvision, I discovered Frezned and Nanalew, as well as Alex's roomate Charlieissocoollike.

What I enjoy about these guys is that they're all from different countries, different continents, even, but they can collaborate on projects like Worldvision and Project for Awesome. Not to mention the healthy doses of humor they inject into their videos. Please note that the link to Project for Awesome only takes you to one of the many videos included in this YouTube-wide collaborations, so go check out more of them if you're interested in the project.

I realize that this post is already rife with things to click on, so while my subscription list is much, much longer than just the five mentioned here, I think I'll post again later with some of the newer people I've found on YouTube, and give whomever is reading this a chance to check out those five before I go throwing more in your direction.
